De schrijvers
This "werkstukpakket" is written by Chantal Soeters. She studies English literature at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. She also takes courses in Women's Studies at the University of Utrecht. She is specializing in contemporary women's fiction and feminist theory. She decided to study English literature because she is addicted to reading and the English language.
Relatie met de studie
At the department of English at the VU no courses are taught which specifically deal with the Gothic. However, aspects of the Gothic come up in a great number of literature courses. The British literary tradition includes a great number of literary masterpieces which can be placed in a Gothic literary tradition. A few examples of these classics are Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (1764), Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847), Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights (1847) etc. In the last decades the Gothic has experienced a re-birth. This revival of the Gothic is most visible in the (postmodern) works of women writers. At the Vrije Universiteit more and more attention is being paid to women's literature and feminist literary criticism. The Gothic is in many ways linked to 'gender' and has played an important role in the formation of a female literary tradition. It will therefore be discussed in these particular courses on these topics, but it may also appear in other courses.
