It is hard to define the Gothic but everyone is familiar with it in one way or another. The increasing popularity of the Gothic is visible in a wide range of contemporary cultural forms, from Madonna's latest albums to the short stories of Angela Carter. The revival of the Gothic in contemporary women's fiction is linked to cultural movements such as postmodernism and feminism. Postmodernism and feminism share radical skepticism with regard to traditional social and cultural codes. The Gothic is famous for its rebellious nature. It goes against the grain of traditional literary codes and assumption and its potential to cross and break down boundaries is explored in contemporary women's fiction. Susanne Becker calls this new form of powerful `gendered' Gothic writing neo-gothic fiction which reflects the unexpressed horrors of family life. Neo-gothic fiction explores the dark side of life. It is a mixture of pleasure, terror and desire. It is characterized by its great sense of humour: its comic irony, its playfulness, its use of parody and its eroticism. It is challenging, disturbing and fascinating to read. Explore this dark side of literature and write your paper on the Gothic.
